International Design Conference 2024: Connecting Cultures Through Innovation
The International Design Conference on Integrated Interdisciplinary Innovation 2024, hosted by National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech), brought together students from the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) and Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) for an enriching international exchange experience.
Held at YunTech and complemented by cultural immersion activities in the city’s historic districts, the conference was designed to inspire students through the theme of cross-cultural collaboration and interdisciplinary innovation. By bringing together participants from Taiwan and Vietnam, the event created a dynamic environment where students could explore real-world issues, exchange perspectives, and develop creative solutions through international teamwork.
More than an academic gathering, the conference served as a platform for nurturing global citizenship, intercultural understanding, and creative confidence, equipping students with the mindset and skills needed in an increasingly interconnected world.
A key highlight of the program was the opportunity for students to explore Beigang Old Street, one of Taiwan’s most culturally significant heritage areas. Through visits to local religious sites, traditional neighborhoods, and culinary destinations, participants gained firsthand insights into the region’s cultural identity and living heritage.
Supported by the Director of the Institute of Creativity and faculty members including Tsai Wang-bin, Peng Li-qi, Du Ruize, Huang Shixing, Truong Bin, and Yu Hongzhang, students worked in mixed Taiwanese–Vietnamese teams to undertake a unique creative challenge. Each group was tasked with identifying representative local cultural elements and transforming them into innovative co-creation concepts.
The process encouraged participants to apply design thinking, cultural observation, collaborative problem-solving, and cross-cultural communication while developing creative responses to contemporary issues relevant to young people. By integrating local cultural narratives into their projects, students not only deepened their understanding of Taiwanese heritage but also learned how design can serve as a bridge between tradition and innovation.
The workshop culminated in the creation of original design outcomes, challenging students to translate their research and experiences into meaningful creative works while strengthening teamwork and intercultural collaboration.
Showcasing Creativity and Strengthening Global Connections
All completed projects were exhibited at Aesthetics Space on the day following the workshop, providing a platform to showcase the results of this international collaboration. The exhibition highlighted the creativity, cultural insights, and interdisciplinary thinking demonstrated by participating students throughout the program.
Beyond presenting final outcomes, the exhibition created opportunities for participants to share learning experiences, exchange ideas, and reflect on the value of international collaboration. It reinforced the importance of combining culture, creativity, and innovation to address contemporary challenges while celebrating diversity and mutual understanding.
As an open and accessible event for students interested in academic exchange, the conference exemplified how international partnerships can foster meaningful educational experiences, strengthen cultural connections, and inspire the next generation of creative leaders to make a positive impact across borders.
