Design Futures 2025: A Global Learning Journey at Tsinghua University
Continuing their international academic journey at Tsinghua University in Beijing, two student teams from the School of Media Design (SMD), University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), immersed themselves in a transformative and inspiring learning experience at one of the world’s most prestigious universities.
The 2025 summer program, “Design Futures: Shared Vision,” brought together talented students from seven countries, including Vietnam, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Finland, and Italy. The program fostered a vibrant multicultural environment where participants exchanged perspectives, built global connections, and explored innovative approaches to design in an increasingly interconnected world.
Through intensive collaboration and cross-cultural engagement, students were encouraged to rethink the role of design in addressing contemporary challenges while developing the global mindset required for future creative leaders.
Throughout the program, students were immersed in a dynamic academic environment where theory and practice were seamlessly integrated through a series of interdisciplinary learning modules. Key topics included Design Thinking, Robotics, and Aerospace Systems, exposing participants to emerging technologies and future-oriented innovation frameworks.
Beyond acquiring advanced knowledge, students were challenged to apply design methodologies to real-world problems, develop human-centered solutions, and strengthen critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills—competencies that are increasingly essential in the era of digital transformation.
A highlight of the program was the opportunity to work directly within Tsinghua University’s state-of-the-art laboratories. Supported by international mentors and leading experts, students transformed ideas into functional prototypes, gaining valuable hands-on experience throughout the design and innovation process.
Global Collaboration and International Recognition
In addition to academic learning, the program served as a genuine international platform for collaboration. Students worked closely with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds while engaging in discussions with professors, researchers, and creative practitioners from around the world.
These interactions provided invaluable opportunities to develop intercultural communication skills, expand professional networks, and cultivate the adaptability required to thrive in global creative industries.
At the conclusion of the program, two SMD student teams—Bánh Mì and Yilu Shunfeng—received the prestigious “Social Impact” Award in the Smart Creation category, which recognizes innovative AI-powered projects that generate meaningful social value and contribute to sustainable development.
From UEH to the World: Shaping a Sustainable Future Through Design
Both projects were highly commended for their practical applicability, social relevance, and potential for real-world implementation. Their success reflects the academic excellence and creative capabilities of SMD students, as well as their commitment to innovation driven by social responsibility.
The recognition earned at a prestigious international program such as the Tsinghua Summer Program represents an important milestone for both the students and UEH. It demonstrates how emerging designers can leverage technology and creativity to create positive impact while addressing real societal needs.
The achievements of Teams Bánh Mì and Yilu Shunfeng further strengthen UEH–SMD’s presence on the global academic stage and reaffirm the university’s mission to cultivate globally minded citizens who are innovative, collaborative, and committed to sustainable development.
